Different Types of Homelessness

Not all homeless sleep on the street. Based on my experience I will describe the different types from bottom to top.

At the bottom, you find the homeless that got nowhere to go, they sleep on the street. Sometimes they are lucky enough to have a sleeping bag, but usually they are sleeping on concrete/wood flooring. The experienced ones will use a few cardboard boxes, flatten them and make a bit of a cushion to lay on. It may seem like a small detail, but cardboard can help avoid scratches if the surface is rough and block some of the wind.

Those who are slightly better off, usually have either a friend or family member that allows them to sleep over once in a while at their home. This privilege usually goes along with an offer to use the shower as well.

Living in a shelter sounds good, until you hear the nightmare stories from a few that had their stuff stolen, got verbally abused or beaten. It is far safer to sleep alone in the street than live in a shelter with a group of people who can easily take your belongings. Still many accept the risk because they want a roof over their head. A lot of shelters also offer meals and assistance to find work.

Then at the top, are those lucky enough that have a car where they can sleep and store their belongings. The downside is that if there is no cash for gas it is quite easy to get towed and then things get exponentially worse with towing fees and parking ticket on top of that. The upside is that it's easier to find work with a vehicle (specially if it's a van or truck).
