When you have few choices

So, you are in an area where things aren't going your way. Here are some tips that can help you survive.

No Food - Alright, so there is no soup kitchen nearby and the businesses I recommended all refuse to give you any food. The foolish thing to do here would be to steal. DON'T STEAL. Sooner or later you will get caught and the cops will not care that you were hungry. Instead you need to go dumpster diving if you want to eat. It may sound disgusting, but usually food being thrown out has just hit the expiration date, which means that it is probably still good for a few days. Specially canned foods and sealed bags of goods like candy and bread. Eating a Hershey's bar won't replace a healthy meal, but it beats being hungry. You will need to dive after hours, late at night when nobody is around. If you have a flashlight things will be much easier, or if you can use your phone as a light source. Be aware that it can be illegal to dumpster dive in some areas but cops are likely to give you a break if you say you are looking for food and not making a mess. Another risk is that you can easily get cut while diving, glass and other sharp objects may be in your way, sometimes not too visible until you already bleeding. It's safer to search slowly and get a small cut than fast and get a cut that needs stitches. Be ready for this with either band aids or toilet paper/napkins. You should focus on local stores because large chains like Publix, Walmart and Kmart have dumpsters which you won't have access to (they are locked).

No Water - This is something you rarely will face. Drinkable water is everywhere, bathrooms in businesses, parks and public bathrooms. However if you end up away from any residential or commercial area you may have no access to water. Always carry one bottle of water in case of emergency. Don't travel too far away from a main road/highway, because sooner or later there will be a gas station where you can get water. If you are in the woods, then hope that you can catch some rain. You can dehydrate and even die after 3 or more days if you are in a rough area. If you have access to water which is NOT DRINKABLE, here are 5 ways to purify water

No Bathroom - Being able to release yourself is important for your health. Always carry a roll of toilet paper. If you have no money to even buy one roll (which is quite possible), then look for a porta potty (portable restroom) which usually are found at or near construction sites (after 5 pm is the best time). Most of them have 2-4 new rolls, ONLY TAKE ONE. You want to carry just what you need, not what you want. If there is no available bathroom (check "Basic Rules of Being Homeless" page) for your use, then you are away from residential or commercial areas and likely on the road. In that case, you'll have to be careful to not be seeing when releasing yourself. Always do it with some sort of cover around you, be it natural (bushes or trees) or man made (abandoned or unused structures).
